Topic outline

  • Introduction

The Data Division (ERDD) of the Economic Research and Development Impact Department (ERDI), supports statistical capacity building, produces annual publications, participates in international statistics initiatives, conducts methodological research on various data issues and maintains numerous statistical databases focusing on Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) developing member countries (DMCs). In addition, ERDD provides data services to other departments within ADB and to external clients.

As part of statistical capacity building, ERDD has designed and implemented ADB-funded technical assistance projects on  statistical methodologies, which assist the DMCs in producing timely, relevant, and accurate economic and social statistics. Further, ERDD has initiated programs that pilot the use of advanced data tools, techniques, and non-traditional sources to support policy making and research in DMCs.

In line with this, ERDD brings you a one-stop shop of the available online courses developed for data practitioners in DMCs, private sector, and academe. Other courses developed by ERDI may also be included in the future.

  • Courses Offered

    EROD-SDI offers the following courses:

    1. CSPro for Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) - This course will guide students through the questionnaire design and implementation for one of the leading CAPI platforms, CSPro or Census and Survey Processing System. CSPro is a free software package developed by the US Census Bureau, primarily for the editing, processing, and dissemination of census and survey data.

    2. Survey Solutions for Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing - This course will guide students through the questionnaire design and implementation for one of the leading CAPI platforms, Survey Solutions. Survey Solutions is a free software package developed by the World Bank to assist governments, national statistics offices, and non-governmental organizations in implementing advanced surveys using mobile devices. Survey Solutions has been used notably by the World Bank in the conduct of the Living Standards Measurement Survey. The software is easy to use and is capable of tailor-fitting questionnaires to specific needs––from simple questionnaires to more sophisticated ones that involve multistage panels.

    3. Advanced Survey Solutions for Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing - This course introduces learners to the topics and lectures based on the recent updates in Survey Solutions, furthering their advanced learning of the platform. This course is an advanced offering to our flagship online Survey Solutions course. By the end of the course, students will have gained the ability to use advanced techniques, such as enabling or validation conditions among others. Students will also learn about validating global positioning system coordinates, advanced methods of setting up dates, as well as other upgraded features of Survey Solutions.

    4. Statistical Data and Metadata eXchange (SDMX) Foundation Course - SDMX provides an integrated approach to facilitating statistical data and metadata exchange, enabling interoperable implementations within and between systems concerned with the exchange, reporting and dissemination of statistical data and their related meta-information. The course is divided into two modules. Module 1 provides a high-level introduction to SDMX and its benefits. Module 2 explains SDMX concepts in more detail, providing actual data producers, handlers, and users (e.g., statisticians and IT practitioners) a theoretical understanding of how SDMX works.

    5. SDMX Tools - The course is divided into two modules. Module 1 provide participants an overview of SDMX tools for common scenarios or use cases. Module 2 provides an overview of the features and demonstrations on how to use (1) SDMX Constructor, (2) Fusion Metadata Registry, and (3) SDMX Converter for selected use cases.

    6. QGIS Online Course on Agricultural Statistics - This course will: (i) introduce the learners to the fundamentals of geographic information system (GIS), basic spatial data concepts, and data types; (ii) train learners on the functionalities of QGIS; and (iii) use QGIS for agricultural data collection, mapping, and subsequent data analysis.
